DES MOINES, Iowa — Championship football is defined by how a team responds to adversity. On Saturday afternoon at Duke Williams Stadium, the 3rd-ranked Grand View Vikings proved exactly why they are a national powerhouse, overcoming a sluggish start to defeat Culver-Stockton College 47-17.
With the victory, Grand View extends its winning streak to four games and maintains a perfect 4-0 record in Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division play, improving to 7-1 overall.
A First-Half Scare
The visiting Wildcats (2-6, 1-3) arrived in Des Moines determined to pull off a monumental upset. Utilizing an aggressive offensive game plan, Culver-Stockton stunned the home crowd by dropping 14 points on the Vikings in the opening quarter.
Grand View’s offense struggled to find its early rhythm, leaning heavily on defensive adjustments just to stay within arm’s reach. When Culver-Stockton added a field goal in the second quarter to stretch their lead to a commanding 17-7, the Vikings found themselves in unfamiliar territory.
The 100-Yard Turning Point
Trailing 17-14 late in the second quarter, Grand View’s defense was backed up against its own goal line. Culver-Stockton was driving deep into Viking territory, looking to punch in a late score before halftime and recapture all the momentum.
Instead, the game completely flipped on a single, historic sequence.
As the second-quarter clock ticked to zero, Culver-Stockton took a shot at the end zone. Grand View defensive back Simeon Reichenbach read the quarterback’s eyes perfectly, undercutting the route for an interception. Finding a wall of blockers along the sideline, Reichenbach sprinted the length of the field, completing a breathtaking 100-yard pick-six touchdown as time expired.
The dramatic defensive score gave Grand View a 28-17 lead heading into the locker room, completely breaking the spirit of the upset-minded Wildcats.
Dominant Second-Half Surge
Coming out of the break, the Vikings looked like a completely different football team. The defense clamped down entirely, pitching a second-half shutout and forcing multiple turnovers. Reichenbach finished his stellar afternoon with a second interception, logging 108 total return yards on the day.
Offensively, head coach Joe Woodley utilized a dual-quarterback system to perfection, keeping the Wildcat defense off-balance. Jack Jepson delivered an efficient performance under center, completing 9-of-10 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Casey Rooney was equally sharp, going 7-of-10 for 89 yards and a passing touchdown, while adding a score on the ground.
The quarterback tandem was supported by a relentless rushing attack that wore down the Wildcats in the second half. Grand View racked up 191 total yards on the ground, led by Bryant Williams, who averaged nearly seven yards per carry on his way to a team-high 76 yards. Running back Dalten Van Pelt added 61 hard-fought yards and a rushing touchdown to ice the game.
In total, the Vikings scored 40 consecutive, unanswered points to turn a tense first-half battle into a comfortable 47-17 rout.
Looking Ahead
With the division race heating up, Grand View’s ability to handle early punches and execute under pressure bodes well for their postseason aspirations. The Vikings will look to keep their perfect conference record intact next week as they march deeper into the Heart of America schedule.
