INDIANOLA, Iowa — An explosive first-half onslaught propelled the University of Dubuque Spartans to a commanding 56-27 victory over the Simpson College Storm on Saturday afternoon at Bill Buxton Stadium. The win extends Dubuque’s current winning streak to four games and keeps them a perfect 3-0 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) action.
From the opening kickoff, the Spartans’ offense operated at a hyper-efficient pace, carving up the Storm defense to build a lead that Simpson simply could not erase. Dubuque’s high-powered attack averaged a staggering 7.9 yards per play, racking up 428 total yards of offense in just 18 minutes and 8 seconds of possession time.

Air Attack Demolishes Storm Defense

The Spartans did most of their damage through the air. Dubuque quarterbacks combined for a highly efficient 21-of-31 passing performance, accumulating 274 net yards and stretching the Simpson secondary thin.
While Simpson’s ground game fought hard—churning out 142 yards on 36 rushing attempts—the Storm struggled to find any rhythm in the passing game. Dubuque’s defensive unit held Simpson to just 129 yards through the air, forcing 7 incomplete passes on 21 attempts and repeatedly halting Simpson’s momentum.

Third-Down Woes Doom Simpson

The defining story of the game layout was execution on critical downs. The Spartans were nearly unstoppable on third down, converting 4-of-7 opportunities (57%) to keep scoring drives alive. Conversely, the Storm found themselves locked down when it mattered most, finishing a dismal 3-of-12 (25%) on third-down conversions.
Simpson found brief life on fourth downs, converting all three of their desperate late-game attempts to sustain drives, but the efficiency came too late to counter Dubuque’s early scoring barrage.
Despite Simpson holding a massive advantage in time of possession (27:47 to Dubuque’s 18:08), they were forced to play catch-up against a quick-strike Spartan offense that scored early and often. With the win, Dubuque solidifies its position near the top of the A-R-C standings, while Simpson looks to regroup after falling at home.
