DURHAM, N.C. — A dominant rushing attack and a stifling defensive performance carried the Duke Blue Devils to a season-opening 17-3 victory over the Tulane Green Wave on Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium.
The contest marked a physical, defensive battle where Tulane struggled to find offensive rhythm against a disciplined Duke front.
Sheppard Powers the Blue Devils
The definitive storyline of the afternoon was the breakout performance of Duke running back Nate Sheppard. Operating behind an offensive line that consistently generated push at the point of attack, Sheppard carved through the Green Wave defense for a career-high 227 rushing yards.
Sheppard accounted for both of Duke’s touchdowns, providing the essential offensive spark in a game where passing yards were hard to come by for the home team. Duke completed the afternoon with 381 total yards, leaning heavily on a ground game that chewed up 250 yards.
Defensive Standoff and Penalties Plague Tulane
While Tulane’s air attack managed to outgain Duke in the passing column—204 yards to Duke’s 131—the Green Wave could not establish a complementary ground presence. Duke’s defensive front completely neutralized the Tulane running game, limiting the visitors to a meager 54 yards rushing.
Compounding Tulane’s offensive frustrations were self-inflicted errors. The Green Wave were flagged 15 times for 104 penalty yards, repeatedly stalling drives and forcing the offense into difficult, long-yardage situations. Tulane finished the day with 258 total yards and was held without a touchdown, managing only a single field goal on the scoreboard.
Looking Ahead
With the season-opening victory, Duke establishes a physical identity built on a powerful running game and a lockdown defense. Tulane returns home facing immediate areas of correction, particularly in regards to discipline and run blocking, as they look to bounce back in week two.
