NEW ORLEANS — The St. Augustine Purple Knights didn’t waste any time making themselves at home under the lights of the Caesars Superdome.
Behind a lethal, explosive offensive display and a suffocating defensive front, St. Augustine rolled to a dominant 52-7 victory over the East Ascension Spartans. The marquee matchup served as the emphatic nightcap of the Inspire the City Invitational, moving the undefeated Purple Knights to 3-0 and securing a historic milestone for their leader.
With the victory, St. Augustine head coach Robert Valdez celebrated his 150th career coaching win. Valdez was honored on the field postgame, though his focus remained squarely on his team’s execution.
“I knew about it but was trying to tune it down,” Valdez told reporters regarding the milestone. “I was locked in on the game. I’m so grateful for family, our administration and our kids just to come out here and get this type of victory.”
Quick Strike Offense Sets the Tone
The Purple Knights’ offense was a model of ruthless efficiency, racking up 387 total yards and 26 first downs. St. Augustine found the end zone on its first four consecutive possessions to completely control the game from the opening kickoff.
Junior quarterback Vonn Noble orchestrated the aerial attack with poise. After an early opening score, Noble capped off a methodical 8-play drive by throwing a dart to senior wide receiver Miguel Whitley for a 15-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 14-0 late in the first quarter.
St. Augustine’s defense quickly forced back-to-back turnovers on downs, repeatedly handing the offense short fields inside East Ascension territory. The Purple Knights capitalized immediately. On the first play of the second quarter, running back Keith Davis punched it in from 6 yards out. Minutes later, Noble connected with Joshua Williams on a 9-yard touchdown pass, leaving the Spartans trailing 27-0.
A Brief Flash of Hope
East Ascension (2-1) struggled to find consistency against the Purple Knights’ speed but managed to construct a scoring drive just before the intermission.
Spartans senior quarterback Zaylen Smith locked in on wide receiver Jeremyah Merriweather, who proved to be the lone bright spot for the East Ascension offense. Merriweather hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Smith with 3:06 left in the second quarter, capitalizing on a strong night where he finished with 81 receiving yards on eight receptions. The touchdown sent the teams into the locker rooms with St. Augustine leading 27-7.
Purple Knights Slam the Door
Hoping to swing momentum, East Ascension opened the second half with an ambitious on-side kick attempt. The gamble backfired. St. Augustine recovered at midfield, and just 12 seconds into the third quarter, Noble launched a deep pass over the middle to junior Lucas Jefferson, who took it 50 yards to the house.
The 34-7 lead broke the game wide open, sparking a run of 25 unanswered points from New Orleans’ historic powerhouse.
Junior Khlil Lewis extended the lead with a 4-yard touchdown run to conclude a bruising drive. Less than sixty seconds later, the St. Augustine secondary got in on the scoring action when senior defensive back Payton Thomas intercepted a Zaylen Smith pass and returned it 22 yards for a pick-six.
Keith Davis closed out the night’s scoring with a 12-yard run in the final frame, finishing his night with 55 rushing yards on eight carries. He shared backfield honors with dynamic runner Kingston Robinson, who paced the ground game with 70 yards on just seven touches.
District Play Looms
The high-flying Purple Knights have officially put the state on notice, outscoring their three non-district opponents by a staggering 140-20 margin.
Both squads will now pivot to crucial district matchups next week. St. Augustine faces a highly anticipated test against John Curtis Christian next Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium. Meanwhile, East Ascension will look to bounce back as they travel to Gonzales to take on fierce rival St. Amant on Friday night.
