GONZALES, LA — In a thrilling Friday night showdown that came down to the final seconds, the Prairieville Hurricanes secured a historic 41-34 victory over the Ponchatoula Green Wave, marking the first football program win in Prairieville High School history.
Senior defensive back Khywan Striggs emerged as the game’s ultimate hero, intercepting a Ponchatoula pass at the goal line with just two seconds remaining on the clock to turn away a furious Green Wave comeback and ignite a massive celebration on the Hurricanes’ sideline.
Kelly Fuels the Storm
Prairieville’s offense found its rhythm early, spearheaded by a dynamic dual-threat performance from quarterback Skyler Kelly. The signal-caller slice-and-diced the Ponchatoula defense all night, racking up 238 total yards of offense.
Kelly was lethal both in the air and on the ground, delivering:
- 133 passing yards and precise distribution when it mattered most.
- 105 rushing yards, routinely breaking away for critical first downs.
- 4 total touchdowns to keep the Hurricanes ahead in a high-octane offensive track meet.
Green Wave Rides Late Surge
Ponchatoula refused to go down quietly. Despite falling behind early in the contest, the Green Wave offense battled back behind chunks of yardage in the second half. They put together a masterful final drive, marching deep into Hurricane territory to put themselves in position to force overtime.
However, the late-game execution fell short on the final play as Striggs read the quarterback’s eyes, stepped in front of the pass, and sealed the historic result.
Looking Ahead
With the hard-fought victory, the Prairieville Hurricanes improve to 1-1 on the season, bouncing back perfectly from their previous week’s loss. Meanwhile, a resilient Ponchatoula Green Wave squad falls to 0-2 but shows immense promise moving forward into district play.
