PLAQUEMINE, La. — In a rivalry clash defined by explosive big plays and breathtaking late-game drama, the Plaquemine Green Devils survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback to edge out the Brusly Panthers 42-36 on Friday night at Green Devil Stadium.
The victory keeps Plaquemine unbeaten in District 6-4A play and extends their dominant streak over their West Baton Rouge Parish rivals to five consecutive games.
Early Fireworks Setting the Tone
The contest lived up to its rivalry billing immediately. Brusly struck the first blow, using an aggressive ground game to establish an 8-7 lead by the end of the opening frame.
The second quarter, however, belonged to the offenses. Plaquemine quarterback Jermaine Robinsonbegan carving up the Panthers’ secondary, launching a pair of touchdown passes that flipped the momentum. Brusly kept pace thanks to a crucial interception by defensive back Dervin Ricard, which halted a driving Green Devils offense and set up a short field. By the time the halftime whistle blew, Plaquemine held a narrow 28-22 advantage in what was rapidly becoming a classic Friday night shootout.
Dorsey’s Heroics Seal the Shootout
Plaquemine appeared to take control in the third quarter, stretching their lead to 42-30 behind Robinson’s brilliant dual-threat display. Robinson finished the night with a staggering 355 total yards and four touchdowns, consistently making plays with both his arm and his legs when the Green Devils needed to move the chains.
Yet, Brusly refused to fold.
With less than a minute remaining in the game, Panthers quarterback Reggie Riley escaped pressure and delivered a strike down the sideline to Tremon Lemar for a 46-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 42-36 with just 50 seconds on the clock.
The tension reached a fever pitch on the ensuing kickoff when Brusly executed a perfect onside kick, recovering the ball at the Plaquemine 35-yard line with a chance to win the game. But on the very next play, Plaquemine defensive back Zachariah Dorsey read Riley’s eyes, undercutting a route for his second interception of the night. Dorsey’s takeaway secured the football and allowed the Green Devils to run out the clock.
Impact and Outlook
With the win, Plaquemine improves to 3-2 overall and, more importantly, 2-0 in District 6-4A, positioning themselves as primary contenders for the district crown. Brusly drops to 1-4, but the Panthers proved they possess the offensive firepower to compete with anyone in the district moving forward.
