The Caesars Superdome has played host to plenty of heavyweight prizefights over the decades, but few have carried the quiet, simmering intensity of Saturday night’s collision between Edna Karr and Ruston. When the dust settled on the second annual Inspire the City Invitational, it was the Cougars who remained standing, grinding out a 21-14 victory that felt less like a September non-district game and more like a preview of a state championship war of attrition.
For Edna Karr, this was a testament to championship DNA. Entering the night riding an imposing winning streak and carrying the weight of back-to-back Division I Select state titles, the Cougars looked ready to run away with the marquee matchup early. They flew out of the gates, carving up a stout Ruston defense with surgical precision and jumping to a 14-0 advantage in the opening quarter. Every blade of turf seemed painted in gold and maroon as Jermond “Tre’Tre” Macklin found his rhythm behind a dominant offensive line, punching in the game’s opening scores and setting a ferocious pace.
Yet, you do not travel down from Lincoln Parish to New Orleans just to roll over. Ruston, boasting the pedigree of a premier Class 5A powerhouse, absorbed the early blow and did what great teams do: they recalibrated. Sparked by a gritty touchdown run from Dalen Powell and an electric reception by LSU commit Ahmad Hudson, the Bearcats mounted a furious counterpunch. By the time the halftime whistle echoed through the cavernous dome, the scoreboard read 14-14, erasing Karr’s early cushion and turning the contest into a brand-new, heavyweight slugfest.
If the first half was played at a dizzying, explosive sprint, the final two quarters became a masterclass in trench warfare. Both defensive units adjusted, clamping down the hatches and making every yard a brutal negotiation. The middle of the field shrank, passing windows closed to mere slivers, and the game devolved into a pure test of willpower. It was a fitting atmosphere for an event honoring the legacy of the late, great Ed Daniels, a man who chronicled the absolute best of Louisiana high school football with fierce passion.
In the crucible of the fourth quarter, champions need a closer. Edna Karr found theirs once more in Macklin. Completing his stellar night, the running back shouldered the load and slashed through a fatigued Ruston front for his third touchdown of the evening, breaking the deadlock and giving the Cougars the decisive 21-14 edge. Ruston fought desperately for a late answer, but Karr’s defense slammed the door, extending the Cougars’ remarkable winning streak to 31 games and improving their resume to a pristine 3-0.
For Ruston, the loss stings, but it exposes no fatal flaws; this was a game of inches between two titans operating at the absolute apex of high school football. For Edna Karr, it was another chapter in an evolving dynasty—proof that when the lights are brightest and the opponent refuses to break, the Cougars still know how to bend time, space, and the scoreboard to their will.
