PRAIRIEVILLE, LA — In a game that fully delivered on the promise of the District 5-5A opener, Denham Springs leaned on a punishing ground game and timely special teams execution to survive a 42-39 shootout against Prairieville on Friday night.
Yellow Jackets running back Tanner Koerner proved to be the difference-maker, shredding the Hurricanes’ defense for 219 rushing yards and three touchdowns to spoil Prairieville’s historic first-ever home district game.
Hurricanes Surge Early
Prairieville came out firing in front of a raucous home crowd, setting the tempo early. Quarterback Skyler Kelly orchestrated a dynamic offense, keeping the Yellow Jackets off-balance with his arm and his legs. Kelly finished the night with a spectacular dual-threat stat line, throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns while punishing Denham Springs on the ground for 129 rushing yards.
With Courtnei Payne hitting the holes hard for two rushing touchdowns, the Hurricanes matching the Yellow Jackets blow-for-blow. Prairieville capitalized on early momentum to carry a narrow 24-21 lead into the halftime locker room.
Special Teams and Koerner Swing the Momentum
The second half, however, belonged to Denham Springs’ execution in the game’s third phase. The Yellow Jackets completely flipped the script by executing and recovering two crucial onside kicks, starving the explosive Prairieville offense of possessions.
With the extra opportunities, Denham Springs turned to Koerner to wear down the Hurricanes’ front front line. The Yellow Jackets also found timely balance through the air as quarterback Devin Kinchen managed the game efficiently, completing 8 of 14 passes and delivering a critical 27-yard touchdown strike to Trey Seals.
The relentless rushing attack allowed Denham Springs to seize the lead and construct a 42-31 cushion deep into the fourth quarter.
A Furious Finish
Prairieville refused to go quietly. Digging deep, Kelly engineered a late scoring drive, capping it off with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to trim the deficit to just three points at 42-39.
With four minutes remaining, the Hurricanes needed one final defensive stop to give their offense a chance at a miracle comeback. But Koerner and the Denham Springs offensive line wouldn’t deny. The Yellow Jackets picked up a series of grinding first downs, effectively running out the clock to secure a gritty road victory.
Looking Ahead
With the win, Denham Springs advances to 3-1 overall and starts league play at 1-0. Prairieville drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the district, though the Hurricanes proved they have the offensive firepower to compete with anyone in District 5-5A.
