DONALDSONVILLE, La. — True elite programs find a way to thrive amidst chaos. When a last-minute schedule shuffle and venue change threatened to disrupt Week 5, the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs simply locked in, delivering a masterclass in execution to dismantle the Assumption Mustangs 51-8 on Thursday night at Floyd Boutte Memorial Stadium.
Initially slated for Friday night in Napoleonville, the contest was moved up a day and relocated to Donaldsonville following a mid-week LHSAA ruling that stripped Assumption of its remaining home games. The sudden shift did nothing to slow down the powerhouse Bulldogs, who extended their flawless season record to 5-0.
The Bulldogs’ offensive line dictated the terms of engagement from the opening whistle, paving the way for an explosive rushing attack. Dynamic back Caden Mays ignited the home crowd early, capitalizing on dominant upfront blocking to punch in two first-quarter rushing touchdowns.
With the ground game firmly established, quarterback Gregory Fernandez took the top off the Mustangs’ defense. In the second quarter, Fernandez executed a perfect play-action fake before delivering a strike to Jacob Julien to extend the lead to 22-0.
Assumption showed life briefly when quarterback Zamajh Jamison orchestrated a drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Cemahj Myles, cutting into the deficit. However, any hopes of a Mustang comeback were instantly extinguished before the intermission. Fernandez found Cy Landry deep down the sideline for a scoring strike, and physical runner Raphael Melancon broke multiple tackles on a spectacular touchdown run, sending Ascension Catholic into the locker room with a commanding 29-8 halftime lead.
The second half belonged entirely to the Bulldogs’ defense and the bruising run game. Melancon continued to punish the Mustang front seven, driving through a wall of defenders in the third quarter for his second rushing score of the night. Fernandez later added a rushing touchdown of his own, showcasing his dual-threat capability.
Fernandez put the exclamation point on his stellar night in the final frame, connecting with Landry for their second touchdown hookup of the game to close out the 51-8 blowout.
With the victory, Ascension Catholic cements its status as a top contender in the state, carrying immense momentum into the back half of the regular season. For Assumption, the tough road loss forces a quick reset as they navigate the remainder of their season away from home.
