Why is John Fury, father of Tyson and Tommy, banned from entering the United States?

The Fury family has recently had their fair share of issues entering the United States. One of the key figures of the family has not been allowed to enter the United States for quite some time.

John Fury, the father of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has been denied entry into the US for years. John was not around for Tyson’s US tour starting in 2018. Tyson would beat Deontay Wilder in 2020 for the WBC heavyweight title.

But why has John been denied access to the US? Here are the details.

Why has John Fury been banned from entering the United States?

In 2011, Fury was found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after gouging a man’s eye out in a brawl in 2010. This incident occurred during a car auction. Handed a 10-year+ prison sentence, Fury was released in 2015. The man he injured ended up becoming half-blind.

His criminal record halted plans for him to obtain a visa, as he has been rejected by the United States several times.

Was John Fury a boxer?

John, 58, is a descendant of former bare-knuckle fighters and has competed in a few fights of his own. Born in Ireland but living in England, Fury was 8-4-1 as a professional boxer.

Following his career, John became a cornerman and has supported Tyson Fury throughout his run in the sport. He is notorious for speaking his mind about him and creating tension before the big fights. John talked about the lack of faith the media had in Tyson before his bout with Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. His son would beat Klitschko to become heavyweight champion.

YouTuber Jake Paul and Tommy Fury, Tyson’s half-brother, are set to main event at Madison Square Garden on April 6. That fight almost didn’t materialize because Fury may not have had the majority of his corner with him. In a rant on social media, John explained the legal issues within the Fury fight camp.

“You can have the fight on August 6, but it has got to be not in America because all of us at the minute are suspended and banned for life. I can’t get there at all,” Fury said, via Mirror. “Tyson can’t get over there because he has a few issues at the moment that he is trying to sort out. So Tommy has got no team.”

Despite those issues, the contracts got signed, and the fight became official.

Daniel Kinahan founded MTK Global in 2012. He has reportedly advised the likes of Carl Frampton, Liam Smith, Tyson and Hughie Fury.

Dublin’s High Court has named Kinahan a senior figure in organized crime. That includes involvement in international drug-trafficking operations and firearm offenses. In 2016, there was a shooting at the Regency Hotel in Dublin before a fight night with MTK Global. It appeared to have been an attempted hit on Kinahan, according to Boxing Scene, as a result of the longstanding rivalry between the Kinahan and Hutch crime families.

United States officials in Dublin, Ireland announced a $15 million reward regarding any information on Daniel Kinahan and his family. The Treasury Department stated the group consists of key members of the “Kinahan Organized Crime Group.” The Irish Police commissioner went on to say if there is anyone that has or continues to work with Kinahan or those sanctioned, that, “you are dealing with criminals engaged in drug trafficking,” per ESPN.

What is Daniel Kinahan’s relationship with the Fury’s?

When Tyson and Anthony Joshua agreed in principle to face one another in 2020, Fury thanked Kinahan on social media. That fight never materialized.

According to Nicola Tallant and Niall Donald of the sunday world, Tyson was recently refused entry into the United States by US immigration. This was reputedly due to his links from him to Kinahan. John Fury’s rant on social media may very well have been teasing this news.

Tyson retired in 2022 after beating Dillian Whyte to retain the WBC heavyweight title. Fury recently stated that he would return to the ring to face the winner of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua. A bout to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion, Fury’s asking price would be $500 million. Usyk will be fighting Joshua in a rematch in August for the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles.
