Can Lovlina follow Olympic success by CWG success?

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain kicked off her Commonwealth Games campaign with a convincing 5-0 win. She defeated New Zealand’s Ariane Nicholson in a women’s 70kg pre-quarterfinals bout late on Saturday night.

In the quarterfinals, the two-time World Championship bronze medalist will be up against 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Rosie Eccles of Wales on late Wednesday evening.

Nikhat and Ashish Kumar eye semifinal berth

Nikhat Zareen had no problems in her previous round match against Mozambique’s Helena Ismael Bagao.

Nikhat toyed with her opponent across the three rounds, forcing the referee to stop the contest with 48 seconds left in the final round. In the last-eight stage on August 3, Nikhat will be up against an experienced of Wales, who got a bye. Helen Jones of Wales, who got a bye.

Light heavyweight boxer Ashish Kumar (80kg) produced a dominating show to advance to the last eight with a 5-0 unanimous decision win over Travis Tapatuetoa of Niue. A win on Wednesday evening will see him guarantee a medal in Birmingham.
