DES MOINES, IA — Top-ranked Johnston left no room for doubt on Friday night, delivering a masterclass in all three phases of the game to shut out Des Moines Roosevelt 49-0 at Mediacom Stadium. The regular-season finale victory officially secures the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A for the Dragons as they march into the postseason.

From the opening kickoff, Johnston (8-1) established complete control. The Dragons’ explosive offense found the end zone early and often, while a suffocating defensive front completely neutralized the Roughriders’ (5-4) attack, preserving a pristine shutout to close out the regular season.

With the definitive win, Johnston locks up the top overall seed in Iowa’s largest classification.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) officially released the Class 5A pod pairings following Friday’s contests. As the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, Johnston will begin its postseason run at home next week.

The Dragons are set to host No. 15 seed Pleasant Valley (5-4) in the opening round on Friday, October 30, at 7:00 PM.

The path to the Class 5A state championship will run through Johnston. Should the Dragons advance past Pleasant Valley, they will host the winner of the Dallas Center-Grimes vs. West Des Moines Valley matchup in the quarterfinal round on November 6.

For Roosevelt, the loss concludes a competitive 5-4 regular season, as they look ahead to rebuilding for another run next fall. Meanwhile, Johnston turns its focus to a singular goal: capturing the Class 5A state title.
