INDIANOLA, IA — In a clash of two 7-2 heavyweights looking to extend their postseason journeys, Iowa City Liberty’s aerial assault proved too much for Indianola. Behind a masterful four-touchdown performance from junior quarterback Emerson Berner and a pair of late-game takeaways by senior standout Pryor Reiners, the Lightning secured a hard-fought 28-14 road victory at Indianola Stadium on Friday night.
With the win, Iowa City Liberty advances to the Class 5A quarterfinal round, while a resilient Indianola squad sees their impressive season come to an abrupt close.
A Fast Start for the Indians
Indianola struck first, capitalizing on an early offensive rhythm. Quarterback Nolan Freeman guided the Indians down the field, capping off the opening drive with a 22-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver George Blake.
The Indianola defense stood strong early, keeping the Lightning out of the end zone in the first quarter and maintaining a 7-0 advantage heading into the second frame.
The Lightning Strike Back
The second quarter belonged entirely to Iowa City Liberty’s passing game. Berner found his rhythm, picking apart the Indianola secondary with precise intermediate throws. He connected with Leo Rozz for two spectacular first-half touchdowns, swinging the momentum firmly back to the visiting sideline.
Indianola managed to tie the game momentarily when Freeman orchestrated a clean two-minute drill, finding Parker Amos for a 4-yard touchdown pass. However, Liberty responded instantly. Berner launched a 21-yard dart to Pryor Reiners just before the intermission, sending the Lightning into the locker room with a 21-14 lead.
Reiners Shuts the Door
The second half shifted from an offensive shootout to a defensive gridlock. Liberty extended their lead to 28-14 in the third quarter when Berner found Reiners again—this time on a deep 34-yard route that left the Indianola defensive backs chasing.
From there, Indianola’s offense fought desperately to close the gap, but the Lightning defense refused to break. Reiners transformed from an offensive weapon to a defensive eraser, dropping back into coverage to log two critical interceptions in the second half. Both turnovers thwarted promising Indianola drives deep in Liberty territory, effectively freezing the clock and securing the victory.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Iowa City Liberty pushes their record to 8-2 and books a ticket to the Class 5A quarterfinals, where a highly anticipated matchup against powerhouse Ankeny awaits. Indianola wraps up an excellent campaign at 7-3, bidding farewell to a senior class that restored the program into a definitive playoff contender.
