LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the second consecutive week, Kentucky head coach Will Stein looked conventional wisdom in the eye and blinked first. And for the second consecutive week, his high-stakes gamble paid off in historic fashion.
Quarterback Kenny Minchey ran untouched into the end zone on a bold two-point conversion in overtime, lifting the Kentucky Wildcats to a thrilling 35-34 upset over the No. 10 LSU Tigers on Saturday night at a raucous Kroger Field. With the victory, Kentucky becomes the first program in college football history to win back-to-back overtime games by exactly one point.
Early Fireworks and Regulation Drama
The night began with an absolute lightning bolt. On Kentucky’s very first offensive play from scrimmage, running back C.J. Baxter found a seam and exploded for a 77-yard touchdown burst, setting an explosive tone for what would become an instant SEC classic.
LSU (4-2) answered behind a gritty performance from quarterback Sam Leavitt, who systematically picked apart the Wildcats’ secondary, throwing for 275 yards and two scores. The Tigers took a late fourth-quarter lead and appeared to have the game in hand until the Kentucky defense delivered a game-altering play. A fierce edge rush resulted in a strip-sack of Leavitt, handing the ball back to the Wildcats’ offense deep in Tigers territory.
Kentucky’s ensuing drive seemed destined to stall after kicker Adam Zouagui missed two field goal attempts earlier in the fourth quarter. However, when called upon with the game on the line, Zouagui completely redeemed himself, drilling a clutch 33-yard field goal with just 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 27-27 and force overtime.
Overtime High Stakes
LSU possessed the ball first in the extra period and wasted no time re-establishing control. Leavitt capped a swift possession by calling his own number on a 15-yard touchdown run, putting the Tigers ahead 34-27.
Facing a daunting third-and-long on their mandatory response drive, Kentucky found magic. Minchey lofted a pass down the sideline to freshman wideout Kenny Darby, who hauled in a spectacular 22-yard reception to set the Wildcats up at the 1-yard line. Baxter punched it in on the next play, bringing Kentucky within a point at 34-33.
Instead of opting for the conservative extra point to force a second overtime, Stein didn’t hesitate. He kept his offense on the field. Minchey lined up in an empty backfield, took the snap, and executed a textbook quarterback draw, parting the LSU defense to walk into the end zone completely untouched for the game-winning conversion.
The Fallout
The historic victory sent a sea of blue cascading over the brick walls of Kroger Field as ecstatic fans flooded the gridiron. The celebration will come with a literal price tag, as the SEC subsequently announced a mandatory $500,000 fine issued to Kentucky for violating the league’s access-to-competition safety policies. Per conference policy, the financial penalty will be paid directly to LSU.
The analytical fallout was just as massive. In the wake of the upset, Kentucky (5-1) skyrocketed eight positions up to No. 17 in the latest Coaches Poll. Conversely, LSU suffered a brutal slide, plungeting 11 spots down to No. 21 as they look to re-evaluate their playoff trajectory.
