Last year’s runner-up Only The Brave returns here after a win at Salisbury on Thursday but the emphasis was very much on stamina there and there are no guarantees this race will pan out in the same way. Preference is for ROYAL PROSPECT, who won here last summer and hinted at a possible return to form on his latest outing. Clotherholme is a second choice, while Fire In The Rain is another to consider.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

There’s little to choose between Bearwith and Mac Ailey from Redcar last month, albeit the winner had a bit in hand that day. The inconsistent Bankawi remains fairly treated but this could be set up for WILLING TO PLEASE, who’s 2lb lower than when winning over C&D last September. Ailish T hasn’t had many chances at beyond sprint trips and is another with claims if more amenable in headgear.

Barenboim returned to the Flat with a good run at Newbury recenty and is respected but INNSE GALL will be hard to beat in this company if able to replicate the form he showed when third in the Cumberland Plate over C&D in June. Zihaam is next on the list.

The most striking contender is CLIFFTOP HEAVEN, who got back in the scoresheet with an easy win under Brodie Hampson at Doncaster and was only narrowly denied in his follow-up bid at Wolverhampton three weeks ago. He remains well treated on his old form and is a major player again back on turf. Recent AW winner Hackberry is feared most, though Diocletian, turned things around with a second at Catterick last month and looks interesting if he can build on that. Others to consider are Vis A Vis and Tomorrow’s Angel.

He is yet to win on turf but BLAZING HOT remains on a good mark after running well in defeat on his recent stable debut at Doncaster and might well be seen to better effect over this stiffer 5f. He gets the nod ahead of Sir Benedict, who usually travels strongly over 6f/7f and looks quite interesting on this drop back in trip. Excessive can also feature.

Liberation Point, who has got it together since ridden aggressively in blinkers, and Detective, who’s only finished out of the first two once in 12 runs round here, both hold obvious claims. None of the others can be ruled out though, and a chance is taken on CROWNTHORPE, who is used to plying his trade in better company and is attractively weighted now, having offered more last time. Any rain would suit Bowland Park, who’s another to consider.

This might go to HELM ROCK, who is 2-2 at Carlisle, has generally been in good form this season and could have untapped potential beyond 1m. Newmarket raider Limited Edition began this season with two very encouraging runs and is not yet fully exposed. Solid cases can also be made for Where’s Jeff and Poet’s Dawn.

Somewhere Secret did well to finish third over C&D one month ago, having raced wide, but the suggestion is IRIS DANCER (nap), who also raced wide when second to an unexposed 3yo in a much stronger C&D race than this two starts ago and can be excused her subsequent defeat over 7f. Langholm should also be on the premises, while usual slow-starter Glorious Rio lurks on a dangerous mark.
